After churning out runs consistently in the domestic circuit, Suryakumar Yadav finally got the opportunity to be associated with the Indian Premier League in 2011, after he was bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) at the auction for INR 10 lakhs. The right-handed batter couldn’t get an opportunity to showcase his prowess in the first season and had to watch the stars go about their business from the dugout.

Though a modest one, Suryakumar Yadav made a meaningful contribution in Mumbai’s Champions League T20 win in 2011 as they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to win the summit clash. Suryakumar scored 47 runs at an average of 47.00 and a strike rate of 130.55 during Mumbai’s title-winning campaign.

Though he didn’t get game time, he was also a part of the Mumbai squad, which won its maiden IPL title in Rohit Sharma’s leadership in 2013. Mumbai defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final by 23 runs. Mumbai released Suryakumar ahead of the 2014 season, and that led to another wonderful chapter of his IPL career.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who were looking for an Indian batter to bolster their middle order, splurged INR 70 lakhs on Suryakumar and acquired his services. Suryakumar played 16 games that season for KKR, aggregating 164 runs at an average of 32.80 and a strike rate of 140.17. His valuable contributions played an instrumental role in helping KKR win their second IPL title.

Suryakumar played for KKR for the same price until he was left out at the end of the 2017 season. IPL 2018 saw the homecoming of Suryakumar as Mumbai paid INR 3.20 crore at the auction to rope him in. He helped the franchise win its fourth and fifth IPL titles in 2019 and 2020, respectively, by delivering commanding performances.

Suryakumar amassed 424 and 480 runs in the two seasons at a strike rate of 130.86 and 145.01, respectively. His paycheck was increased to INR 8 crore in 2022 and further upscaled to INR 16.35 crore in the 2025 season.
