MS Dhoni has become synonymous with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). No other player in the history of Chennai Super Kings’ IPL run has earned the kind of fandom Dhoni wields. It all started at the inaugural auction of the marquee tournament in February 2008.
While Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh didn’t feature in the IPL auction as they were chosen ‘Icon Players’, MS Dhoni’s name was put in the auction list. Dhoni had a base price of USD 400,000, and CSK acquired him for USD 1.5 million after engaging in a bidding war with Mumbai Indians.
Dhoni turned out to be the most expensive buy at the 2008 auction, followed by Australia’s allrounder Andrew Symonds (USD 1,350,000) and former Sri Lanka skipper, Sanath Jayasuriya (USD 975,000).Having guided India to the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in South Africa in 2007, the CSK fans had a lot of expectations from him, and he nearly fulfilled all of them.
CSK finished third on the points table after the end of the group stage behind Rajasthan Royals (top) and Kings XI Punjab (second). The Yellow Army aggregated 16 points after eight wins and six losses with a net run rate (NRR) of -0.192.
CSK qualified for the finals and took on Rajasthan Royals in the summit clash. Set 164 to win, Rajasthan Royals got over the line with three wickets to spare, and CSK had to settle for the runner-up tag. However, CSK put the disappointment of 2008 behind them and beat Mumbai Indians in the final in 2010 to clinch their maiden title.
