Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as a generational talent who is spearheading Team India’s pace attack. Originally from Ahmedabad, Bumrah was spotted by the former Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach John Wright. Bumrah was representing Gujarat in the 2012/13 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Wright, who happened to be present for one of Gujarat’s matches, spotted Bumrah.

Wright was impressed by Bumrah’s ability to nail yorkers with metronomic accuracy and a fairly unconventional action, which was certainly not out of a coaching manual.

As per the information available on Mumbai Indians’ official website, “Wright immediately called up Rahul Sanghvi, the MI manager and signed Bumrah by the very next day itself and the rest, as they say, was history.”

Gujarat defeated Punjab in the summit clash by six wickets to lift the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that season, and Bumrah played an instrumental role in making that happen.

The right-arm pacer finished with 10 wickets in nine games at an average of 22.40 and an economy rate of 6.58, including his best bowling figures of 3/14. Bumrah made his IPL debut on April 4, 2013, in a game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which was played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 4.

It was Mumbai’s season opener. Bumrah got the opportunity to share the bowling responsibilities with established international stars like Mitchell Johnson, Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel and Jacob Oram, among others.Bumrah’s maiden IPL wicket turned out to be the RCB skipper, Virat Kohli.

Kohli got across the line to an incoming ball which tailed in from a wide angle and struck him in front of his stumps. Bumrah returned figures of 3/32 in four overs at an economy rate of 8.00 and bowled as many as 12 dot balls. He was the pick of all the Mumbai bowlers that night.
