Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has made his public statement after stepping away from international cricket. Reflecting on his nearly 15-year-long career, Stokes said that it was full of “highest highs to the lowest lows (on and off the field)” and that his time as an international cricketer was up and no one was going to make that decision other than him.

Stokes announced his retirement before the start of play on day four of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. His decision caught many by surprise, sending shockwaves around the world.
Stokes took the opportunity to express his gratitude to every England fan and those who supported him wholeheartedly throughout the course of his career.
“It’s been a mad 15 years. It’s had everything thrown in there, from the highest highs to the lowest lows, both on and off the field. My time was up, and no one was going to be able to make that decision other than me.
“I want to say I love every single England fan and every single cricket fan who’s supported me over the years. I love every single person I’ve walked out onto the field with representing England.
“I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist of how much I loved doing what I did for 15 years. I’m looking forward to being a fan and supporting the team, and the odd day in hospitality won’t go amiss. Family, friends, teammates, fans — I love you all. Stokesy.”
Stokes’ retirement has created a massive headache for England’s team management as they not only have to look for a captain but also a seam-bowling allrounder who could take Stokes’ place. Vice-captain Harry Brook has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Stokes.
