Jasprit Bumrah takes first wicket in IPL 2026

Jasprit Bumrah put an end to his wicketless run of five matches in IPL 2026 on Monday (April 20). For the first time in the entire season, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya lobbed the new ball to Bumrah and asked him to bowl the very first over.

Bumrah responded immediately as he dismissed Gujarat Titans’ reliable opener Sai Sudharsan on the very first ball. Bumrah’s wicket also snapped the opening partnership of Shubman Gill and Sudharsan, which could have taken the game away from Mumbai.

It was the first time in Bumrah’s 276-match-long T20 career that he bagged a wicket on the very first ball of an innings. It was also only the 16th instance in his T20 career that he had taken the new ball and only the sixth occasion in the Indian Premier League.

How Bumrah enginnered Sudharshan’s dismissal

While it was a landmark moment for Bumrah, it put a blot on Sudharsan’s T20 career. This was the first occasion when Sudharsan got out for a duck in his 46 innings in the IPL and also his first in 71 T20 innings.

Bumrah bowled a fuller delivery, angling away from Sudharsan, but the Titans batter was lured into playing an aerial drive through the point region. Sudharsan had no control over the shot as he couldn’t impart elevation to it and was unable to smash, as it was a check drive and not a full-blooded one.

Krish Bhagat, who was fielding at point, accepted a simple catch and Gujarat were one down for none on the board.Interestingly, Bumrah bowled 146 balls in the IPL before taking the wicket of Sudharsan on Monday. His last IPL wicket was Washington Sundar during the Eliminator of the 2025 season.

It was his only wicket in the match as he registered figures of 1/27 in four overs. Bumrah went wicketless in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He leaked 40 runs in that game at 10 runs per over. It took him 122 balls in the 19th edition of the IPL to claim his first wicket.
