Afghanistan have announced a 15‑member squad for their upcoming five‑match ODI series against Ireland, starting August 5. This will be the first series for Rahmat Shah after being appointed full‑time skipper. Rahmat is Afghanistan’s leading run‑getter in ODIs, with 4,121 runs at an average of 35.22.
Having served as vice‑captain in Tests and ODIs since 2021, this marks his first time leading the side. Seamers Fazalhaq Farooqi and Yamin Ahmadzai have been selected to strengthen the pace attack. Farooqi, currently representing Dambulla Sixers in the Lanka Premier League (LPL), has claimed five wickets in two matches. His last ODI appearance came against Australia on February 28, 2025, in Lahore during the ICC Champions Trophy.

Meanwhile, Ahmadzai, 33, last played ODI cricket in November 2022. Mohammad Nabi has not been picked for the series. The veteran all‑rounder is currently representing Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) in the Global Super League. Mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is out injured and was therefore not considered for selection.This will also be the first ODI for Hashmatullah Shahidi since his resignation as captain.
Shahidi led Afghanistan in 55 ODIs between 2022 and 2026, securing 27 wins and 25 losses. His tenure ended with a win percentage of 49.09 and a loss percentage of 45.45.The Ireland‑Afghanistan ODI series will begin on August 5.
