Why is the team management reluctant to let Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his India debut?

India’s tour of Ireland has become a major talking point after the Men in Blue suffered a 34‑run defeat in the first T20I, their first-ever loss to Ireland in men’s international cricket. The result itself was shocking, but what stirred even more debate was the decision not to hand Vaibhav Sooryavanshi a direct entry into the playing XI.

Fans, already upset by the defeat, pointed to Sooryavanshi’s absence as a key reason behind India’s poor showing in Belfast on June 26. Their frustration is understandable. Few players have captured the cricketing world’s imagination in recent months quite like Sooryavanshi.

After showing glimpses of his talent in IPL 2025, he exploded in IPL 2026, rewriting records at just 15 years of age. He smashed the most sixes in a season, scored the most runs by an uncapped player, and became the fastest to 1,000 runs in IPL history and that was not all.

His performances were so extraordinary that chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted they had no choice but to fast‑track him into the national setup. Sooryavanshi’s rise didn’t stop there. In the recent tri‑series in Sri Lanka involving India A, Sri Lanka A, and Afghanistan A, he produced a jaw‑dropping 29‑ball 94 in the final.

That innings included the fastest fifty ever in List A cricket, off just 11 balls, and helped Tilak Varma’s India A clinch the trophy. With such blistering form, many expected him to debut immediately against Ireland. Yet the team management chose caution.

What’s causing the delay in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international debut?

India are the reigning T20 world champions, having beaten New Zealand in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad. Most of the current XI were part of that triumph, and they have earned their place. Sooryavanshi is an opener, but India’s opening slots are occupied by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, both of whom have been outstanding.

Samson was India’s leading run‑getter at the World Cup with 321 runs, playing decisive knocks against West Indies, England, and New Zealand, and was named Player of the Tournament. Abhishek, meanwhile, is ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I batting charts thanks to a string of consistent, explosive performances.

Dropping either of them would be unfair and a disservice to their contributions. That is why, despite Sooryavanshi’s undeniable talent and the clamour for his debut, the management has held back. His time will come, but for now, the team is standing by its proven performers.
