Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) engaged in a historic player trade confirmed by the IPL on November 14 last year. The player deal saw Sanju Samson head to CSK in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. While the deal was beneficial for both teams, it can be argued that CSK have benefited more from it.
Sanju Samson: The versatile batter
Samson is a versatile batter, capable of batting anywhere from the top to the middle order. The entire world witnessed the calibre of Samson, the opener, during the fag end of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Samson played three phenomenal knocks – 97* off 50 vs West Indies in the Super Eight, 89 off 42 vs England in the semis and a 46-ball 89 in the final against New Zealand to win India the silverware.
As for his middle-order performance, Samson has played several match-winning knocks for Rajasthan in the middle order.
Samson: The wicketkeeper
Samson is a natural wicketkeeper. Unlike most makeshift wicketkeepers these days, Samson is highly trustworthy in terms of his glove work. Natural wicketkeepers are more likely to convert half-chances compared to makeshift ones, and that can be crucial in winning and losing a game.
Samson: The leader
Samson has plenty of leadership experience under his belt. The lad from Kerala holds the record for most matches as captain for Rajasthan Royals. Samson led Royals in 67 matches, winning 33 and losing as many. One game ended in a no result.
He surpassed the legendary Shane Warne in terms of wins for Rajasthan Royals. Warne had led Royals to 31 wins.Additionally, Samson has also led Kerala in the domestic circuit.
The potential replacement for MS Dhoni
While it will be incredibly tough for CSK to find MS Dhoni’s replacement, they can’t get anyone better than Samson. Like Dhoni, Samson is also a wicketkeeper-batter and a leader who can control the game. He can guide bowlers from behind the stumps by mapping out plans for opposition batters, just like Dhoni. Samson can also be a leadership option moving forward for CSK if their investment in Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t bear fruit.
Having led Rajasthan in the IPL, Samson knows what it takes to deliver as a leader, and CSK can definitely benefit from that experience.
What can Rajasthan gain from Ravindra Jadeja?
Rajasthan Royals can also gain plenty out of Jadeja. He is one of the most experienced spin-bowling allrounders in the cash-rich league. Jadeja can provide Rajasthan with crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs. He is also a gun fielder and can be deployed at any corner in the field.
Moreover, Jadeja can play the finisher’s role for Rajsthan. His heroics in the IPL 2023 final against Mohit Sharma to win CSK their fifth title serve as a prime example of his finishing prowess. The only thing that may go against Rajasthan as a part of this deal is that at 37, Jadeja is not getting any younger. He may already be past his prime and therefore may not necessarily have as many years to offer Rajasthan that Samson at 31 can.
