Lungi Ngidi suffers head injury in Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings clash
The incident unfolded at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on the third ball of the third over of Punjab’s innings. Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya made room to a full delivery by Axar Patel on the stumps and slashed over mid-off. Ngidi, who was stationed at mid-off, backpedalled but couldn’t really judge the trajectory of the ball.
He stretched his right hand at the last moment in a desperate attempt to catch the ball, but it went in vain. The South African seamer landed awkwardly on his back with the back of his head slamming into the ground.
His head bounced at the point of contact with the ground. He held his head immediately and rolled to the side, and stayed still before the physiotherapist of Delhi Capitals rushed to his head.
The rest of the Delhi players and fans who had assembled to watch the game took a sigh of relief after Ngidi was seen talking to the physio on the giant screen at the venue.
A stretcher was immediately brought onto the ground to take him off. The match officials then asked for an ambulance, and Ngidi was then moved inside it. Doctors and physios present at the occasion strapped a neck brace around Ngidi’s neck before he was taken inside the ambulance, and the match resumed.
Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera made his way onto the field of play, replacing Ngidi as a substitute fielder. For the unversed, Delhi Capitals signed Ngidi at the IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi for IN 2 crore.
