The chairman of London Spirit, Julian Metherell, has been named as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He was nominated by the incumbent MCC president Ed Smith at the Club’s 239th Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Metherell has been a member of the Club for the last 40 years. He became a part of the MCC Committee for a three-year tenure after approval from the MCC Members at the previous AGM.

Metherell played a pivotal role in finding an investment partner in London Spirit. He has a background in finance and held the designation of CEO of the UK investment banking vertical between 2006 and 2011.
Metherell expresses delight over appointment
Metherell expressed immense pleasure over his appointment and looked forward to serving the MCC with integrity and passion.
“I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols. I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord’s,” said Metherell of his appointment.
“This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit.”
Smith felt that the Club can benefit greatly from his expertise and experience.
“During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the Club. Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate. It is with enormous pleasure that I nominate him as the President of MCC from 1 October 2026,” said Smith.
Metherell’s tenure as MCC president will witness Australia’s men’s and women’s teams play at Lord’s during the 2027 Ashes.
