Cricket Australia (CA) is looking forward to hosting the opening game of the 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) in India in December. MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, also known as Chepauk, which is home to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has emerged as the frontrunner to host the game.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have responded positively to CA’s proposal.

On Monday, May 18, a five-member delegation from Cricket Australia visited Chepauk during CSK’s final home game of the current IPL season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to inspect the venue and review arrangements.

Discussions are also underway at the government level before the plan receives final approval. If everything goes well, it would mark the first time a Big Bash League game would be played outside Australia.

There are still a few logistical challenges that the organisers might encounter, one of the biggest being travel schedules of players. There are no direct flights between Australia and Chennai; only a few routes with a stopover in Chennai that take almost 13 hours.

Recovery time of players is another concern, along with the weather conditions in Chennai during December. The city often experiences heavy rain and flooding during that period.

Broadcast timing is another important factor to consider. Day matches in India would suit the Australian broadcast window, while night games could air very late in the country.

BBL teams keen on playing in Chennai

Several BBL franchises have reportedly shown interest in participating in the proposed Chennai opener. These include Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades. One of the teams would need to give up a home fixture in Australia to play the game in India.

The discussion around hosting a BBL game in India comes at a time when CA is also exploring private investment opportunities for some franchises.
