England cricket finds itself embroiled in controversy after a nightclub altercation in the early hours of Monday morning, following their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. The incident involved England captain Ben Stokes, fast bowler Gus Atkinson, and a Saracens Rugby Club academy player identified as Totoa Auvaa.
Who is Totoa Auvaa?
Auvaa is a 21‑year‑old rugby prospect from Saracens’ academy system. Standing at 6ft 5in and weighing approximately 275 pounds (125 kg), he is a physically imposing figure. Although he has yet to feature for Saracens’ first team, Auvaa has now found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Reports suggest that Auvaa allegedly attempted to throw a punch at Gus Atkinson while the latter was celebrating England’s series‑opening win. The blow is said to have connected with one of the cricketers’ security guards rather than Atkinson himself, but the incident has nonetheless triggered a full investigation.
ECB’s statement over nightclub incident involving Stokes and Atkinson
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the matter in an official release:
“The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible.”
Ben Stokes’ captaincy under threat
The fallout has cast serious doubt over Stokes’ future as England’s Test captain. With the second Test against New Zealand scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval, Stokes’ participation is uncertain as the ECB continues its investigation. This is not the first time Stokes has faced disciplinary issues. In 2017, he was suspended after being involved in a street fight in Bristol following an ODI, an incident that remains a blemish on his otherwise stellar career.
The nightclub brawl has placed both Gus Atkinson and Ben Stokes under scrutiny, while thrusting Totoa Auvaa into unwanted notoriety. For England, the timing could not be worse: a series in progress, a captain under investigation, and questions swirling about discipline and leadership.
