Mumbai Cricket Association introduces contract system for domestic players

In a historic development, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has become the first state cricket association in India to introduce a contract-based system for domestic players. Though MCA has not specified whether the contracts would cover both male and female cricketers.

The contracts will be performance-oriented and will also be awarded based on fitness level and the recommendations of the selection committee.MCA has devised a three-tier contract, Grade A, B and C. Players in Grade A will be able to earn anything between INR 12 lakhs and 20 lakhs per annum. Players in Grade B would fall in the annual income bracket of INR 8 lakhs to 12 lakhs. Grade C players will have an annual earning of INR 8 lakhs.

  • Grade A: INR 12 lakh to 20 lakh per annum
  • Grade B: INR 8 lakh to 12 lakh per annum
  • Grade C: INR 8 lakh per annum

Other than the annual contracts, players would also be entitled to earn match fees, performance-based incentives and daily allowances, as per the policies of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

“The system is designed to support players who are on the cusp of higher honours, ensuring stability and motivation to perform consistently at the domestic level,” the Mumbai Cricket Association said in a release.”This initiative marks a new era for Mumbai cricket,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik said.

“We are proud to be the first association to implement a player contract system – a progressive step that will provide greater security, structure, and growth opportunities for our Mumbai players. It reflects our vision to strengthen the foundation of Mumbai cricket and empower the next generation of cricketers.”

Notably, Mumbai are the most successful team in the history of the Ranji Trophy – India’s premier red-ball domestic tournament. Mumbai have won the prestigious title for a record 42 times. Karnataka are second on the list with eight titles, followed by Delhi (7), Madhya Pradesh (5) and Baroda (5).
